Event Description

The Game Design Masterclass is a crash course in the theory and practice of creating exciting boardgames and card games, led by a professional game-maker with decades of experience.

In three high-energy hours you’ll discover how games function, why people play them, and what makes a good one, then you’ll work in small teams to concept, design, build, playtest and refine a complete game that you can take home with you at the end of the session. You'll also get to test two other new games.

The Game Design Masterclass has run for eight years across three continents, but this is its first time at UK Games Expo. James Wallis (Once Upon a Time, The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen) lectures in game design at London South Bank University and has a column in Tabletop Gaming magazine.

The Games Design Masterclass normally costs £30 to attend, but the sponsorship support by Cartamundi as part of the Publisher Designer Events, allows UK Games Expo to offer you this at a reduced the cost of £15 for UKGE atendees. This £15 includes all game-building materials.

James Wallis, 'the godfather of indie game design', has been working in the industry for thirty years, and is behind the award-winning games Once Upon a Time and The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen. In the 90s he ran Hogshead Publishing, the UK's largest producer of RPGs that decade. These days he lectures in game design, writes a column for Tabletop Gaming magazine, and his book on the history of games (written with Ian Livingstone) will be out later this year from Dorling Kindersley.
