Win the Settlers of Catan Tournament and see the world
Winner flies to Berlin in October
If you are wondering about entering the UK Settlers of Catan Championship this May, just think that if you win you can represent the UK in the World Final in Berlin. The winner of the 2014 event will join the 2013 winner, Paul Henchcliffe in flying the flag in Berlin. What is more your flights and accomodation are paid for by Kosmos (the event sponsors), UK Games Expo and Mayfair Games, (UKGE's major sponsors.)
To give you a flavour of what such a trip would entail here are reports from both Paul and Dominic (our 2013 Winner and Runner up). Both represented the UK in Austria last November. They can be seen above with Larry Roznai (mid picture) of Mayfair Games. Dominic is far left and Paul 2nd from the right. Also pictured are Ian Brown (2nd from the left) and Richard Gough (far right) our joint 3rd placed players in a tense and tight final last May.
Paul Henchcliffe sent us this report:
Taking part in the tournament was quite an experience – incredibly intense. The stakes were high, and there was plenty of negotiation and some pretty brutal sabotage going on throughout. I won two out of the four games on Saturday but scored low in the other games, putting me in 9th position. One of those two wins was on the same table as Dominic (sorry, Dom…hopefully you’ll do well in next year’s UK tournament again).
I was pleased to qualify in the top 16, but knew that the semi-final was going to be a tall order as I was on the same table as the number 1 seed (Katja Fischer, who went on to win the tournament) and I would only get third choice of seat position. As it turned out, the board favoured first player with Katja naturally taking the dominant spot on the board. The dice went her way throughout the game, leading to a comfortable victory and landing me 11th place overall. I’ve boosted the UK a couple of places in the national rankings, and gained some vital experience for the World Championship next year. I think the most important lesson was that I need (a lot) more practice!
During the little downtime we had, we enjoyed the demo games and huge games library at Spielefest and took in some of the Viennese sights, including the wonderful local park. Really looking forward to Berlin now.
Dominic Cousins was the runner up of the 2013 UK Games Expo Settlers of Catan Championship he sent us a short note on his experiences reperesenting the UK in the European championship at the Vienna Spiele Fest in November. Here is what he said:
In November I had the amazing opportunity to go to the Vienna Spiele Fest to participate in the European Settlers of Catan tournament. The event was larger than the UK expo with huge halls dedicated to bring and play along with several rooms available to borrow and play games, but for some reason you couldn’t buy games there. The Settlers tournament spanned two days with the final on the Sunday. The matches were challenging and intense, particularly those on Sunday . Unfortunately I was eliminated on Saturday but this gave me an opportunity to experience the Spiele Fest and play some other games. I did come back to watch the final on Sunday. It was intense - All players were on 9 points and all the development cards had been bought! I also had time on the Friday to look around Vienna. Vienna was beautiful, especially the views, and somehow we managed to see the whole of it in one day! It was an incredible experience and I will definitely be playing in the next UK championship.
